Buffalo Dream

Last Saturday I watched “Buffalo Dream” on Disney Channel. The movie is about friendship, responsibility and care for the world. I was at first impressed with the subtle ways the dreams of the two young men (the main characters) unfold. Josh, whose father is a scientist, worked one day at the photocopying room of the lab his father worked and hated it. He liked the freedom of cycling outside in the wilderness. On the other hand, there was Thomas, an orphan. He dreamed of earning “real” money. His grandparents, earth worshippers, needed him to tend the land and the buffaloes but he spoke about leaving the sacred ground where his grandparents lived. Two young men with different upbringing and two different dreams. I liked the angst of these young men and I liked how they were brought to reality at the end of the show.

The theme of preserving our beautiful world was also worked very well into the show. It gave me the opportunity to tell my children who were watching the show with me how important it is not to pollute our waters and not to vandalize our surroundings.

When a herd of buffaloes was disturbed in their safe grazing ground, they threatened to ram into the village. The attitude of the “bad guys” in the show was “I don’t care. I don’t live there.” But believe it or not, there is always a speck of goodness in each person and soon everyone was rallying to get the buffaloes back to their safe haven. I was delighted that buffaloes have ears for a certain piece of music and they actually “obeyed” when that song was sung. Well, that was how the movie wanted us to believe.

Buffalo Dream – a warm and loving family show that is worth watching together. There are many opportunities in that movie for parents to point to their children, especially the younger ones, the underlying meanings that relate to life.
